The International Organization for Migration urged countries around the world to increase donations to tackle the world’s largest displacement crisis in Sudan, warning on Tuesday that inaction could cost tens of thousands of lives.
Sudan’s Interior Ministry announced that dozens of people had died due to heavy rains, which exacerbated the suffering in the war-torn country. Mohammed Rifaat, head of the International Organization for Migration’s mission in Sudan, said at a press conference that the organization had received only 21% of the support needed to provide necessary assistance to the Sudanese, who were displaced by the war and now face hunger, disease and floods.
“The international community is not doing enough,” Rifaat said. “Without an immediate, massive, coordinated global response, we could see tens of thousands of preventable deaths in the coming months,” he added. About one in five people are displaced within Sudan, totaling 10.7 million internally displaced people, according to the International Organization for Migration. 2.3 million have fled the country across the border.

Yesterday, Sudan’s Interior Ministry said at least 68 people had died due to heavier than usual rainfall.
Sudan’s western, northern and eastern regions have experienced the heaviest rainfall since 2019, affecting areas including the Zamzam refugee camp with a population of 500,000 in North Darfur, which is experiencing famine, and the eastern states of Kassala and Gedaref, where hundreds of thousands of people have fled the offensive of the Rapid Support Forces.
The Interior Ministry said 12,000 houses had fully or partially collapsed and about 198,000 acres of farmland had been damaged due to the rains, but those figures only covered areas controlled by the army in northern and eastern Sudan.
