The conflict in Sudan has forced more than 600,000 Sudanese refugees and 180,000 Chadians living in Sudan to flee to Chad, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Tuesday.
According to the UN News website, the UN Refugee Agency said in a statement that the humanitarian crisis in eastern Chad has reached a critical point and called on the international community to provide urgent support to Sudanese refugees on the Chad border.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said "The conflict in Sudan has forced more than 600,000 refugees and 180,000 Sudanese, the vast majority of whom are women and children, to flee to Chad.".
The committee explained "The refugee flow shows no sign of abating, with around 630 people a day crossing the Adre crossing between Chad and Sudan in May last year.".
She explained that she and her partners had expanded the refugee camp and built two villages for Chadian returnees, noting that these efforts "Not enough to meet huge demand" For refugees in Chad.
She reported that "One third of new immigrants in Chad now live in informal settlements along the border in poor conditions".
UNHCR has warned of a rapidly deteriorating situation on the Chad border as fighting continues in the Sudanese city of El Fasher and surrounding rural areas of North Darfur, with the potential for further displacement remaining high.
The United Nations and the international community have increasingly called on Sudan to avoid a humanitarian disaster that could lead to famine and death for millions as fighting spreads to 12 of the country’s 18 states, causing food shortages.
