If you have been using a device for a while, it will start to slow down over time, which is normal.

In some cases, this might mean it’s time to say goodbye to your current iPhone and buy a new one, but other times, the problem of a slow iPhone might be within your control, so the solution might be simple.

Clear temporary storage space

Your iPhone has a place called a cache where it stores items from apps or websites so that they load faster the next time you use them.

The cache collects items as you browse the web, stream videos or movies, and send text messages that contain photos or videos.

In apps like Maps, cached data may start to use up the available storage space on your device.

To check how much space this storage is using, you need to go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage.

Once your phone finishes the calculation, you’ll see a graph of the categories taking up storage space.

Assuming your temporary storage is taking up too much space, you should empty it.

Uninstall an application

After you uninstall an app, all of its data is retained in case you decide to reinstall it.

To clear an app’s data, go back to your iPhone’s storage in Settings and click General, click the app you want to clear, and then click the Offload App option.

It is worth noting that in the iPhone storage space section, there is a list of applications, each with a number next to its name, indicating the storage space it uses. You can immediately understand which applications are taking up more or less memory.

This can help you decide which apps should be uninstalled.

Clear Safari Cache

If you use Safari frequently, your iPhone may be storing web history and data that you don’t even need.

To clear Safari’s cache, go to Settings, then Safari and clear History and Website Data.

Stop storing SMS messages

By default, your iPhone permanently stores all text messages you send and receive.

This is handy if you need to search for a conversation from (say) 15 months ago, but less convenient if you need to reclaim storage space.

To prevent your phone from saving text messages forever, open Settings and tap Messages. Scroll down to find Message history and tap Keep messages.

Here change the “Forever” option to 30 days or 1 year. A window will pop up asking if you want to delete old messages. Then click “Delete” to continue.

Set Factory Settings

If all else fails, a surefire way to clear your storage of tons of unwanted messages, photos, and videos is to factory reset your iPhone.

To do this, open Settings, tap General, then tap Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Reset and erase all content and settings.

You may need to enter your password or Apple ID and password to confirm your decision. Follow the instructions, then tap Erase iPhone.
