Fort Lauderdale (EEUU) – Jordi Alba had a magical night with four assists as Inter Miami beat the Toronto Raptors 4-3 and booked their spot in the last 16 of the League Cup on Thursday.
Two goals from Paraguayan Matías Rojas, another from his compatriot Diego Gomez and another from Uruguayan Luis Suárez were the reason for Miami’s victory, while Canada responded at times with penalties, both of which were scored by Italian Lorenzo Insigne.
Leo Messi returned to his private box to watch the game and determine his recovery time, with his return possibly being in Inter Milan’s next game.
Heart Attack Part I
The atmosphere at Chase Stadium was unusually chilly, with slow entry and many empty areas in the stands, but it soon heated up with an early goal. Matias Rojas capitalized on Alba’s cross from the left, adding to his assist list this season with a cross-court shot.
Inter had a series of chances in the first minute and the second goal came soon after. On the 11th, another Paraguayan player, Diego Gómez, said he was recovering from the Olympics.
Alba looked for the striker again and, in the central corridor, he received without hesitation the pass from the former free agent, who shot with his right leg from the front and opened the distance in the light.
Just four minutes later, Toronto saw the light. Chelo Weigandt made a mistake and tripped Derek Etienne in the penalty area, leaving him with no choice. A clear penalty got Toronto back into the game as Insigne showed no mercy and completely deceived Callender.
The positives were overshadowed by the injury of Filippo Bernardeschi, who had to retire and left his team, unable to play. As bad news never comes alone, Inter Milan increased their income with the help of Luis Suarez.
Alba once again attacked and passed the ball, although it was an action without the ball for the Gunners, allowing him to deceive the defender and finish at will. It was his second goal in two League Cup games and his 14th for Inter Miami.
Proving that the excitement of the first half did not stop in the 25th minute, David Martinez was sent off, having initially received a yellow card and been awarded a penalty, but a review of the VAR revealed the contact was outside the penalty area, thus resulting in a red card.
Having one less player changed the way the locals approached the game, becoming more conservative and giving the lead to the Canadians.
Another penalty in the 37th minute allowed Insigne to return to the penalty spot, winning more air for the team. This time Callender did guess the Italian’s execution but was unable to clear it.
After the locals won 3-2, they headed to the dressing room, the first respite from the madness that this match had brought to its protagonists.
The brave ten of Inter
Gerardo Martino made a strategic change in midfield, bringing on Yannick Breit for Julian Gressel, and it worked as the Pinks dominated the game and were dangerous despite being outnumbered.
After the locals touched the ball, Alba passed it to Matias Rojas, ten meters in front, who took out his rifle and scored his seventh goal, a powerful shot that Sean Johnson did not react to.
With a two-goal advantage, Martino sent the team back again, with only Luis Suarez left as a reference and threat on the front line.
When the game was over, with 12 points left, Insigne kicked the ball from the left, Etienne headed it in, and Noah Allen’s back touch helped him beat Callender to make the score 4-3.
But Inter knew how to keep the game asleep until the final whistle.
