A 19-year-old Indiana man faces decades in prison after being arrested on suspicion of strangling his mother.

Conner Kobold, 19, is charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault in the death of his 43-year-old mother, Shanelle Burns.

On February 5, police were dispatched to the home in Valparaiso where Cobbold and Burns lived. Burns was found unconscious and not breathing in the living room, and Cobbold shockingly admitted to strangling her. She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Now, Cobbold is facing a mental health investigation into his decision to defend himself at trial and his reasons for allegedly killing his mother.

According to Mail Online, due to the strained relationship between mother and son, the mother issued an eviction order to her son and asked him to find a full-time job within 30 days, clean the room and help with housework.

When Cobbold tried to become his own attorney, Superior Court Judge Michael Fish brought in a mental health expert to investigate his competency.

“I would like Dr. (Anand) Popli to step in and determine whether you are competent to represent yourself,” Fish said Friday.
