Nineteen computers were stolen from third-year students of Honey Senior High School in Kabale, Northern Region, and three people were arrested, an incident that has caused anxiety among teachers and students.
In November 2023, MTN Uganda in partnership with Sense International Uganda donated a state-of-the-art computer laboratory to the school.
Kigezi district police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident and identified the suspects as Nicholas Muhwezi, a computer teacher at the school, Michael Mbabazi, a casual teaching staff member, and Philip Tushabomwe, an Askari man.
It is said that on July 7day On November 23, 2024, at about 11:30 pm, a shooting incident occurred in Rugarama community in Kabale North sub-district, Kabale District.
It is alleged that Muhwezi Nicholas, Mbabazi Micheal, Tushobwe Philip and other fugitives conspired to break into Hornby Secondary School and steal 19 school computers valued at Uganda Shs259,000,000.
He said the real suspect broke into the school with the help of some school staff, broke windows and security doors, and entered the computer lab, taking the alleged computers.
Matt said that that evening, the caretaker, Tushabomwe Philip, went and fetched the principal, Beinomugisha Geoffrey, to report to him what had happened, but the principal was not satisfied with her explanation.
He went to Kabale Police Station to lodge a report and a case of office break-in and theft was registered.
He said police had surveyed and documented the crime scene; police brought in police dogs to lead officers to the highway; police located 08 surveillance personnel and arrested three suspects to assist in the investigation.
The headmaster of Hornby High School’s primary school said the theft had severely hampered the academic progress of students with physical disabilities.
