A South Island man has had his car seized by police and has been charged after he was caught speeding in excess of 170km/h on a state highway.
Senior Sergeant Nathan Snell said the 24-year-old was “driving at a dangerous speed” on Whakatu Drive (State Highway 6) in Nelson about 12.50pm on Wednesday.
The speed limit on this road is 100 km/h.
The man has been charged with dangerous driving and is due to appear in Nelson Local Court.
“Speeding has only one outcome not only for the driver and passengers, but also for anyone you hit,” Snell said.
“Speeding is a factor in around 30 per cent of New Zealand road deaths so police will not tolerate this kind of reckless and dangerous behaviour.
“Fatal car crashes impact more than just the people involved; families, friends, co-workers and emergency responders also have to cope with the pain of losing a loved one due to unsafe driving.”
