According to the Ministry of Health, 17 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) recorded in the first six months of this year came from the North.
Advocate and survivor Temo Sasso said the number is expected to increase in the coming months.
“If we roll out testing, by December we will see an outbreak similar to what we saw on Viti Levu,” he said.
Mr. Sasso said injecting drug use is the main way HIV is spread in North Korea.
“Injecting drug use is like a different playing field that no one could have predicted,” he said, adding that some people were not diagnosed with the virus until much later.
“They have no choice but to get tested.”
He said the government must engage stakeholders and partners.
“Some people living with HIV are disclosing their HIV status.
“We know things that even doctors and scientists don’t know or have experienced.”
Mr Temo said the recent rise in numbers could also be the result of increased awareness of testing.
