The Office of the Mayor of Cochabamba reports that 17 institutions will participate in the “Earthquake Drill” to be held on Sunday, August 11, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Organization of the Territorial Organization (OTB) Recoleta.
Organizers plan to relocate 400 people; however, they are calling on citizens to participate in the event.
Mijaíl Mercado, Secretary of Planning and Environment in the Mayor’s Office, reported that the institutions participating in the exercise included volunteer groups, the Mayor University of San Simón (UMSS), the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service (Senamhi), the Ministry of Environment and Defense, firefighters, the Health Department (SEDES) and the government, among others.
“After the exercise, we have to evaluate the work done by all the participants (…) The alarm will be sounded at 10:00,” he said.
He added that the planning secretariat provided the work plan to all participating agencies.
Mercado said the central government has pledged to send three helicopters. The time required to reach the emergency point will be timed and then evaluated.
The drill will be conducted at OTB Recoleta, which has 14 buildings, seven of which residents have been trained to respond immediately and optimally to emergencies.
“We want to invite citizens to participate in this event. It is very important for parents to educate their children about earthquakes and tremors,” he added.
Similar events are planned for later.
