Celebration of Life

It is an iconic event for a group of people who are particularly proud of their unique traditions.
History of Heiva
Music and dance have always been a core part of Polynesian culture. Tahitian dance, also known as “Ori Tahiti,” is one of the most elaborate and ritualized art forms ever created. However, Tahitian dance wasn’t always performed as freely as it is today. When European Protestant missionaries arrived in the 1800s, they found the “erotic” performances offensive, and King Pomare II outlawed the tradition by law in 1819. Thankfully, the Tahitian people have found a way to keep the dance alive, performing the rituals in secret and passing the tradition down in anticipation of its revival.
The Heiva Festival began to take shape after Tahiti was annexed by France in 1881. At the time, the event was called Tiurai, derived from the word for “July”. It was designed to coincide with Bastille Day, the French national holiday, which is still celebrated every July 14. On this day, the French allowed the Polynesians to participate in their traditional celebrations. The first festivals included games, entertainment and singing, but dancing was still somewhat restricted, forcing them to perform a more “purified” version of the Tahitian dance.
It wasn’t until 1956 that Madeleine Moua, a high school principal in Papeete, took the lead in establishing the Heiva Tahiti dance company, which led to a full revival of Tahitian dance. Soon after, traditional dance became a vibrant part of Tahitian culture again. In 1985, Tahiti gained greater political autonomy from France and renamed the festival Heiva I Tahiti.
Heiva Experience
Each dance performance is unique. The music and choreography reflect historical and legendary themes, highlighting the drama of opera and the unique influence of Tahitian ancestral traditions. Dancers undergo rigorous training for six months or more, and their costumes are handmade using materials unique to the area. The live orchestra consists of five to fifty musicians and uses traditional instruments such as nose flutes or “vivo”, sea shells or “pu” and ukuleles.
In addition to dancing, Heiva I Tahiti is also a traditional sports competition. The sports events are based on ancient sports and include stone lifting, javelin throwing, canoe racing and fruit carrying competitions, where men sprint while carrying large bunches of bananas tied to poles.
