Authorities in Warrap state said 13 people were killed and 12 injured in violent clashes between the Akoke and Luachichian ethnic groups in East Tonj County on Friday.

Authorities said the clashes took place on August 9 when armed Luachjang youths attacked Akok village, sparking clashes that left 10 people dead and four injured on both sides.

Martin Mum, the East Tonj district administrator, told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that Friday’s fighting began when armed youths from the Akok area attacked the Luachjang community.

“Seven people were killed in the Akok section and six in the Luachjang section. Four people were injured in the Akok section and eight in the Luachjang section,” he explained.

East Tongi County Police Officer Deng Madut confirmed the incident.

“Fighting broke out between the Akoke and Luatshajan tribes yesterday from morning till night, with 13 people killed on both sides. The situation remains tense but the information circulating is difficult to verify,” he said.

Madute said the security situation had returned to normal, albeit without government intervention.

Moses Madot, a Warrap state lawmaker, said the fighting was sparked by the killing of a man from the Akok community and his wife by armed Luachjang youths last May. That incident sparked the first revenge attack in June. Since then, the cycle of revenge has continued.
