In a concerted effort to improve the professionalism and service delivery of the Road Safety and Traffic Management Authority, the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, on Saturday, August 17, 2024, delivered a firm message to the Divisional Traffic Officers (DTOs) and their personnel. The meeting was held at the Senior Police Officersโ€™ Mess in Kingtom, West Region.
Chief Superintendent Seru stressed the importance of presenting a professional image, saying: โ€œWhen you are performing traffic duties in a neatly groomed uniform, it instills confidence in your ability to perform your duties efficiently and professionally.โ€ He urged officers to maintain high standards in their appearance and conduct.
The Inspector General outlined his leadership philosophy, claiming that he leads by example to ensure effective and professional service delivery, noting that the police represent the power of the state. He admonished police officers to control their conduct, particularly warning against using mobile phones and taking photos to post on social media while on duty. “We need to improve our conduct, especially when interacting with the public. Changing our behaviour can help change the narrative of our work,” he said.
Mr. Cellu also outlined the transformation of the Sierra Leone Police from a force to a service, stressing the need for officers to improve their capabilities and professional skills. He encouraged officers to be cautious in handling minor offences and issue warnings while taking decisive action for more serious offences. In addition, he urged Divisional Traffic Officers to patrol the roads regularly on motorcycles to facilitate smooth traffic.
Director of Road Safety and Traffic Management, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdul Moijueh thanked IGP Sellu for his guidance. He assured the IGP that under his leadership, allegations of corruption would become a thing of the past and promised to disseminate this message to divisional traffic officers in all provinces to ensure accountability and effective service delivery.
